A researcher, lecturer and writer focusing on the aesthetics of games, media, and software. I have published several articles and book chapters analyzing and interpreting games and game culture. Currently head of the Centre for Excellence in Game Education at Abertay University. Previously led courses on videogame theory, design and history in the Interactive Media and Games Division of the School for Cinematic Arts at the University of Southern California.
I am a member of the Software Studies initiative at Calit2 and the Center for Research in Computing and the Arts at UC San Diego, where I produced visualizations of game play which have been exhibited internationally. As part of the cultural analytics research group led by Lev Manovich, I apply methodologies for data and visual analysis drawn from the natural sciences to the study of cultural activity, especially software-driven culture.
